If you want to gain muscle, is it better to lose fat first or just start working out?
Gaining muscle and sculpting definition are two different things. You can be sculpted, with almost no muscle.
And you can be built like a firetruck, but have no definition.
It depends on what you’re goals are. Do you want to be seen as ‘sexy’ by your average female? Do you want to be seen as strong by your male counterparts? Do you want to fit somewhere in between?
If you want the first picture, you mine as well just do cardio and eat a low calorie diet. If you want the second picture, just start lifting and chugging your protein shakes (possibly weight gainer powder too) with no remorse.
If you want to look like this guy.
Then you have years ahead of you and multiple phases of bulking and cutting to accomplish it. You will have to alternate between the two to keep both muscle growth and body sculpting to an even level.
So it really all depends on what you want. I’m personally working on picture number 3. I’m a few years in, and have give or take 20–30 pounds of muscle to put on before I look anything like him. I’m bigger than the first picture, but with very similar definition.
The manner in which you work out and how you achieve the desired body type is a different question all together. I suggest you do plenty of research before you step foot in a gym. I personally have to chug weight gainer shakes to put on any weight, otherwise I will never see a pound increase on the scale. This causes my abs to no longer be visible near the end of my bulking phase, but during my cutting phase they pop out faster than a college girl on spring break.
