Is it true that being muscular doesn't necessarily mean you can fight?
It looks like someone else pointed out Bob Sapp’s big wimpy self already so I won’t use him as an example. Good thing there are plenty more where that came from. This is MARIUSZ PUDZIANOWSKI:
6′1, 260lbs A former 5 time world’s strongest man.
This man is not a wimp, he has a 10–5 Pro MMA record.
This is Peter “The Chief” Graham:
6′2, 247lbs, 41 years old with an MMA record of 11–10.
This man TKO’d our gigantic friend from earlier in 2:00 minutes on the dot. After a certain point in weight classes most guys just hit hard enough to knock you out. All those muscles don’t cover your jaw and they certainly don’t stop impact to the skull. Our middle aged, journeymen MMA fighter here can knock out most humans on the planet with one punch. It certainly doesn't mean he’s the baddest man on the planet. However, it does mean he, just like most other heavyweights have that one equalizer KO power that can stop a man flat, regardless of his skills and strengths, that’s why you don’t see too many undefeated pro heavyweights, especially in MMA.
So no, being big and muscular doesn’t necessarily mean you can fight.
Added Bonus:
Guys who don’t look tough but are:
Jeremy Horn: 91–22
Roy Nelson: 22–13 with 19 stoppages, Winner of Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter
Shinya Aoki (the guy in the dress): 39–7 with 25 Submission victories, holds Black Belts in Judo and BJJ, won championships in WAMMA, DEEP, Shooto, DREAM, and ONE FC.
BJ “The Prodigy” Penn: 16–11, The second two division champion in UFC history, earned a black belt in BJJ in three years flat from Nova Uniao (one of the toughest and best BJJ schools in the world) and that same year won the BJJ world championships at Black Belt. He’s considered the fastest to earn a black belt in BJJ from a legitimate school and a legend of the sport. (He also likes cheeseburgers)
Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko: 36–4 with 28 stoppages. Fedor is a 3-time Combat Sambo world champion. Between 2001 and 2009 he went on a 29 fight undefeated streak taking on the strongest concentration of heavyweight talent mma has ever put together in Pride FC. He was the longest reigning Pride FC Heavyweight champion and retired the belt. His ability to finish top quality opponents, his mix of grappling and striking, paired with his durability and heart is what has put this chubby Russian heavyweight on top of many peoples list of the greatest mixed martial artist to ever live.
